PLAY/Health Education FAQs

Q: How do I join Sex Ed Squad?

Sex Ed Squad is a fun after school program where youth learn and build skills around various sensitive health topics. Squad members are trained peer health educators and present Condom and Barriers and Healthy Relationship lessons to their peers every semester and are also trained to distribute free condoms on JUHSD campuses. Squad has several fun events and activities that happen throughout the year, our most popular being SQUAM (squad prom).

Sex Ed Squad recruits new members every fall from August to mid-September. Only current JUHSD students are eligible to apply. If you have more questions about Sex Ed Squad or would like to learn more about how to join, please click on the “Ask a Health Educator!” button below.

Q: How can I get free condoms?

Young people ages 12-24 can get free condoms from the Daly City Youth Health Center; just ask for a brown bag. JUHSD students can get free condoms from any trained staff or a Sex Ed Squad member. Everyone else can go to teensource.org and request free condoms through their CAP program.

Q: What are my sexual health rights?

In California, teens have the right to access sexual health care and information without parental approval or notification once they turn the age of 12. This includes STI testing, birth control, pregnancy testing, and abortion care. These rights are protected by California law under AB 499.

Q: Does the Daly City Youth Health Center provide abortions?

No, we do not provide any kind of abortions at the Daly City Youth Health Center. However, if you choose to have one we will connect you with local abortion services.

Q: I want to get a sexual health appointment, but I don’t have time after school, what can I do?

All teens over the age of 12 have the right to access confidential sexual health appointments during school hours. Each school has a different release policy around this, and unfortunately some schools are unaware of these rights. Make sure to check in with your school about what is needed to get released for your sexual health appointment.

JUHSD students - get a special pass from your wellness counselor and bring it to your sexual health appointment. Have it signed and returned back to your school attendance office to make it an excused absence. Friends cannot attend the appointment with you.

Q: How do I know what is the right birth control for me?

There are a lot of birth control options out there! To help you determine which is the best for you, talk to your health care provider and also ask yourself these questions:

  • What kind of birth control will fit my lifestyle? (ease of use, convenient)

  • Do I prefer a method with or without hormones?

  • Do I need pregnancy prevention and STI protection?

  • Do I want a birth control that is discreet?

  • Am I OK with the possible side effects?

Q: My friend (or myself) is in an unhealthy relationship, what do I do?

It’s important to reach out for help right away before anyone gets hurt. You can connect with our behavioral health team by calling (650) 877-5714, talk to a wellness counselor if you are a JUHSD student, or contact CORA (a local domestic violence organization) at (800) 300-1080, 24/7! Do not talk to the unhealthy partner yourself, this could put you or your friend in more danger. In CA, people who are undocumented can still seek help with domestic violence without the fear of deportation.
